22nd July 2013 – Kensington Palace gives official confirmation earlier this evening as Her Royal Highness, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge gives birth to a baby boy in the private Lindo Wing of St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, London. The official statement reads
“Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4.24pm.
The baby weighs 8lbs 6oz.
The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth.
The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news.
Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight.”
A gilt framed easel bearing a written document to provide further confirmation of the birth to the general public has been placed in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace. It simply reads
“Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4.24pm today.
Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well.”
Huge crowds of people including the public and the media have gathered outside Buckingham Palace and St. Mary’s hospital in anticipation of the birth. Record numbers of posts have also been submitted to various social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter to congratulate the Royal couple on their new arrival.
The boy who’s name is yet to be announced will be third in line to the throne after his Father Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and his grandfather, Charles, Prince of Wales. There had been speculation over a change in the Law in 2011 that would have meant that if the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first-born was a daughter then she would have been next in line to the throne rather than handed to a younger brother had one been born later.
The Royal birth will undoubtedly give many Britons reason to once again join in celebration. The birth along with Murray’s Wimbledon win, Froome’s Tour de France Victory and the great Summer weather will certainly liven the spirits of the nation.
