Bad Habits Can Do Your Body Good

Mention the words “bad habits” and you immediately experience feelings of shame, guilt or disgust and think of ways to kick ’em to the curb. But not so fast, because passing wind, swearing, napping and worse have been shown by scientists to be beneficial to your health. Let’s have a look at some of the common bad habits that can do your body good.

Lazing in bed

Having a lie-in i.e. sleeping beyond your normal wake up time at least once a week  can reduce stress, improve your memory and increase your sexual performance. Research has shown that our brains organise the day’s memories while we sleep. Sleeping a little longer therefore gives your brain more time to file away all those memories tidily making them easier to recall when you need them.

Getting that extra hour’s sleep means you’ll have more energy to satisfy your partner’s sexual needs. A recent study carried out by the National Sleep Foundation concluded that 26% of those surveyed said their sex lives suffered because they were just too knackered. Researchers have also observed a link between getting more sleep and higher levels of testosterone, mens’ main sex hormone.

Allowing yourself a little extra time to sleep in the morning helps you to feel more relaxed. This in turn will lead to lower stress levels throughout the day. According to a paper published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism (by the World’s most recognised hormone research organisation), additional sleep may reduce your body’s production of the stress hormones, CRH and cortisol.

Swearing

How many times have you stubbed your little toe on the chair leg or burned your fingers on a hot oven tray and wanted to shout “Fu*@!” but held it in out of politeness? Well according to Dr Richard Stephens of Keele University, letting out that swear word can instantly reduce the amount of pain experienced. In his study he writes that swearing provides more effective pain relief to those who don’t usually swear too often. My advice therefore is to save your bad words for a “painy” day.

Breaking Wind

They stink, they make embarras”sing” (excuse the pun) noises at inopportune moments, but you know what? Parps are essential for your bodily health. The next time you lift your left a cheek to make way for the trumpeteer, remember that it’s saving you from a lot of pain. According to the North American Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, holding back your flatulent gases will lead to cramps, bloating pain and diarrhoea.  Other effects of holding it in are, constipation and the gases can mix with the blood, carried to the lungs, causing bad breath.

Regular Safe Sex

Orgasm through safe sex prevents cancer, relieves pain, soothes menstrual cramps, assists sleep and prevents STDs. Dr Michael Leitzmann of the National Cancer Institute in Maryland, USA, led an eight year study on 30,000 men. Another study was carried out by Dr Graham Giles of The Cancer Council in Melbourne Australia on 1079 men. Both studies concluded that men who “came” around 21 times a month were a third less likely to develop prostrate cancer than those who “came” up to seven times a month. The studies agree that the reduction in cancer risk may be due to the frequent releases flushing cancer causing agents from the tubes.

Research by Stefan Evers, Department of Neurology, University of Münster showed that sex can relieve migraines. The research showed that 60% of migraine sufferers studied, reported complete or partial relief from migraine attacks during sex.

According to leading sexologist, Professor Betty Dodson and neuro-physiologist and sex author, Beverly Whipple, vaginal stimulation can relieve menstrual pain and associated abdominal cramps. Beverly Whipple explains, “There are lots of neuro-transmitters released during sex which evoke emotional happiness as well as having an analgesic effect in blocking pain”

Another benefit of safe sex is of course prevention of the transmission of STDs. No reference needs to be made to any study for this one since if no bodily fluids are exchanged then the risk of having to go to the GUM clinic is zero.

Safe Sex Table
1. The best safe sex is faithful sex with your life spouse. If you’ve both been screened then enjoy as much sex as you can with no need for contraception
2. If you just can’t wait for that special “one” then use a condom to block any fluids
3. The safest sex of all is where there is no-one else but you.

Sleeping on the job

Napping during the day is not only an effective and refreshing alternative to caffeine, it can also protect your health and make you more productive. A study of 24,000 Greek adults showed that people who napped several times a week had a lower risk for dying from heart disease. People who nap at work have much lower levels of stress. Napping also improves memory, cognitive function and mood.
