US First Lady stresses freedom of speech in China

US First Lady Michelle Obama told students in China, which has some of the world’s tightest restrictions on the Internet, that freedom of speech and unfettered access to information make countries stronger and should be universal rights. Mrs Obama’s remarks focused mainly on the value of educational exchanges. She told the audience that study abroad programmes are ‘a vital part of America’s foreign policy’. Concerning a meeting between the US and China First Ladies, Zhang Taofu, a journalism professor at Fudan University, wrote, ‘First Lady diplomacy’ is politics without discussion of politics. ‘It’s often seen as providing rare soft adjustments to the blunt political confrontations.’
